A Crab, A Quill (2021) sonically explores the painting The Naturalist by Victor Grasso wherein an octopus, perched patiently upon a tree trunk, holds many mysterious objects in its tentacles. I viewed this painting in-person for the first time several years ago, and it has been a sticky memory for me ever since: Why is this octopus here? What is it thinking? Why has it come to shore clutching a crab, a quill, a kettle, a teacup, and an axe? A Crab, A Quill examines each of the octopus' objects and attemps to answer these questions in music.
